 The heftiness of this bodhisattva's face and physique is characteristic of sculptures produced in China in the second half of the Tang dynasty, as are the figure's elaborate chignon and heavy jewelry. The text in the bodhisattva's right hand identifies the sculpture as a representation of Manjushri, the embodiment of spiritual wisdom.
