A blackstone stele of Manjushri
Northeastern India, Pala Period, 12th century
Sensitively and finely carved seated in lalitasana on his lion mount, his pendent left leg supported by a separate lotus cushion and with hands held in dharmachakra mudra, wearing a flowing dhoti and beaded jewelry, the face with benign expression and the hair pulled into a high chignon secured by a foliate tiara with thick locks spilling over his shoulders, his left arm flanked by a lotus flower supporting his book, with Bodhisattvas on lotus bases on either side and the five Celestial Buddhas seated above, the base with kneeling devotees on either side and centered by an elephant head
