A rare large gilt bronze figure of Manjushri
18th century
Finely cast and modelled in repoussé seated cross-legged in vajraparyankasana on a double-lotus pedestal, the right hand raised in karana mudra holding the attached flaming sword over the head, the left hand held in vitarka mudra holding the stem of a separate lotus spray supporting the prajnaparamitasutra resting on the flower head at his left shoulder, the face flanked by pendulous earlobes and set with a benevolent expression, crowned with a separate five-leaf tiara enclosing the hair coiled into an elaborate chignon and falling onto the shoulders over the celestial scarf, the graceful body bedecked in jewels and necklaces, wearing a lower garment adorned with a quatrefoil patterns (unsealed).

purchased in China circa 1940, by former Consul Wilhelm Hirsch, Vienna, and thence by descent.
Manjushri is the embodiment of Prajnaparamita, the Perfection of Wisdom, and is considered to be the essence of using knowledge as the means to enlightenment, as is reflected in the present example by the presence of the prajnaparamitasutra, the Book of Knowledge.
