A bronze figure of Vasudhara
Nepal, 14th century
Seated in lalitasana and holding various implements in her six hands, wearing a dhoti with beaded hems and secured with a belt, adorned with multiple necklaces and armbands inset with hardstones, the face flanked by large circular earrings, the hair pulled into a high chignon and secured with a tiara
Vasudhara is the Buddhist goddess of wealth and prosperity. Her gesture of charity and the waterpot and sheaf of grain that she holds are all signifiers of fecundity. For a comparable example, see P. Pal, Art of Nepal, 1985, p. 101, cat. no. S21.
Provenance
Private collection, New York, acquired from Trans Orient Trading by November 1978
