Title: Votive Plaque (Sachcha) of Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness
This small, molded clay plaque shows Buddha surrounded by stupas, or mound-like structures containing relics. Buddha sits with one hand touching the ground, a gesture that represents his moment of enlightenment, when he called the earth to witness his spiritual achievement. At important Buddhist pilgrimage sites such as Bodh Gaya in India, the site where the Buddha achieved enlightenment, votive objects like this were given or purchased by devotees as souvenirs. At home, they could be used during worship.
