Catalogue Note
Ushnishavijaya is regarded as the guardian of the Buddha wisdom and is popularly referred to as 'the mother of all Buddhas'. As one of the three main Buddhist deities of longevity, along with the White Tara and Amitayus, Ushnishavijava combines aspects of the three goddesses, hence her three heads, which are each associated with a sadhana (wish). Compare a slightly earlier Tibetan example, in the Berti Aschmann Foundation in the Reitberg Museum, Zurich, included in the exhibition On the Path to Enlightenment: The Berti Aschmann Foundation of Tibetan Art at the Museum Reitberg Zurich, Museum Reitberg, Zurich, 1995, cat. no. 100; and another figure sold in our New York rooms, 26th March 1996, lot 5.
