Lot Essay
The elaborately carved and gilt-lacquered figure of the God of Wisdom and throne simulate comparable gilt-bronze examples. The style is reminiscent of earlier examples from the fifteenth century based on Tibetan bronzes. The bird at the top of the inner band of the halo is typically Tibetan in style representing the Khyung or Garuda. A similar example was sold at Sotheby's New York, 14 September 2011, lot 324.
